Abstract | This book is intended to help prospective teachers, students in teacher training schools, and in-service teachers to improve high school and junior high school students' reading in their various subject-content classes. Chapters one through six and thirteen through seventeen contain material that applies to all academic subjects in the secondary school: reading as the common factor in learning; teaching the survey technique; reading for main ideas; formulating reading assignments; assessing reading ability; determining the readability of textbooks; helping the poorer student; using the total resources of the school; and forming a professional bookshelf. Chapters seven through twelve provide specific guidelines for social studies, English, sciences, mathematics, home economics, and business, industrial arts, and vocational education. (DI) |
